We are delighted to introduce Stellenbosch University as one of our newest partners for study abroad exchange. This exchange opportunity is currently open to students in International Relations, History, and Philosophy at the undergraduate level, offering a chance to study in one of Africa’s most academically respected and culturally rich environments. We are excited to send our first cohort of students in the 2026/27 academic year.

Our partnership with Stellenbosch University builds on a longstanding relationship spanning more than a decade, rooted in extensive research collaboration particularly across the sciences. This connection has strengthened over the years through our shared involvement in the Town and Gown Network, including participation in the first Stellenbosch Town and Gown Conference in 2018. Beyond academia, we collaborate closely on sport and volunteering initiatives for example through Saints Volunteer Stellenbosch, an international coach development programme run jointly with Stellenbosch University and the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport. We are also proud to have welcomed several Stellenbosch graduates who have completed master’s degrees with us here at St Andrews on sports scholarships, further enriching this dynamic and enduring partnership.

Stellenbosch University offers an academic experience that stands out on the global stage. With more than 35,000 students, it combines the vibrancy of a large institution with the warmth of a close-knit campus community, something that will feel both exciting and reassuringly familiar to St Andrews students. Its academic reputation is exceptional: in the Times Higher Education Africa Rankings 2026, Stellenbosch was ranked joint 2nd on the continent, reflecting its strong performance in teaching, research, and international outlook. This recognition makes it not only one of Africa’s leading universities but also a truly worldclass destination for study abroad.

Just an hour from Cape Town, Stellenbosch’s location offers St Andrews students the chance to experience a lifestyle both different and, in a few ways, similar from life in coastal Fife. Cape Town’s natural landmarks such as Table Mountain, sweeping beaches, and world-renowned vineyards provide an accessible escape for weekend adventures. For many of our students, this proximity to a major global city offers opportunities to explore museums, history, culture, and politics firsthand, enriching their academic studies in IR, Philosophy, and History. Cape Town’s sunny climate and outdoor culture also provide a refreshing contrast to Scotland’s weather, giving St Andrews students an entirely new environment to live, study, and explore.

Sport is another area where Stellenbosch excels, and it offers benefits for students coming from St Andrews. The university is known for its high-performance sporting culture and excellent athlete development programmes, creating an environment where students can engage in sport at a high level. Whether our students want to maintain the athletic commitments they have at St Andrews, improve their fitness, or simply try something new, Stellenbosch’s strong sport identity provides both structure and community. This can be especially appealing for our students used to the tightknit sports clubs in St Andrews, as they can immediately connect with peers through shared physical activities.

Student life at Stellenbosch is equally vibrant. With more than 70 student societies, there are countless opportunities to pursue ongoing interests or try something completely new. Cultural organisations, community engagement groups, arts societies, and academic clubs all contribute to a lively and diverse campus atmosphere. Some societies offer experiences unique to South Africa, such as the Stellenbosch University Zulu Society. An opportunity for St Andrews students to meaningfully engage with local cultures and perspectives. These experiences often stay with students long after their exchange and can be brought back to enrich our own community.

Living and studying in South Africa encourages students to step outside their comfort zones in the best possible way. Adjusting to new cultures, languages, and social norms helps build independence, adaptability, and confidence. The challenges and rewards of daily life in a new environment strengthen problem-solving skills and broaden students’ understanding of the world, qualities that are highly valued by employers and postgraduate programmes alike.

In every way, Stellenbosch blends academic excellencecultural immersioncommunity, and adventure. Our partnership opens the door for St Andrews students to experience a university that is internationally recognised, rich in opportunity, and situated in one of the most inspiring regions of the world. For those seeking personal and academic growth, alongside a truly global perspective, a semester or year at Stellenbosch is an exceptional choice.
