The St Andrews Summer Study experience
This summer we welcomed students from across the globe for an engaging academic and cultural experience on the St Andrews Summer Study programme, with a variety of interdisciplinary undergraduate-level courses on offer ranging from Modern History and Medieval History to innovative fields like Blue Carbon and Evolving Landscapes.

All courses offered an immersive academic experience that extended beyond the classroom and students had the opportunity to engage directly with Scotland’s rich historical and environmental landscapes through field-based excursions. Led by the academic faculty, visits included Dunnottar Castle, The Black Watch Museum in Perth, Arbroath Abbey, the Skinflats, West Highlands and more. These experiences brought learning to life, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world contexts and gain a deeper, more personal understanding of their subjects across St Andrews and beyond.
“I absolutely loved my time at St Andrews—it was genuinely one of the most intellectually and personally enriching experiences I’ve ever had. The structure of the course made space for both critical thinking and curiosity, and I especially appreciated how much we were encouraged to engage with Scottish history beyond the classroom.”
In addition to academic activities, the Summer Study programme offered a rich variety of social, cultural, and recreational experiences. On arrival, students enjoyed campus tours and a welcome pub quiz in town and was a great way to meet up with their peers before the start of classes. Weekend excursions gave students the chance to explore some of Scotland’s most iconic cities, including Edinburgh and Glasgow’s vibrant West End, where students enjoyed the city’s cultural and culinary scene at their own pace. An additional highlight was attending a traditional Highland Games, providing an authentic taste of Scottish heritage and community spirit. No Scottish experience would be complete without sampling the region’s renowned whisky, and students enjoyed a guided visit to Lindores Abbey Distillery. Plenty of free time was also built into the schedule, allowing students to travel independently and explore more of Scotland.
“The balance of academic rigor, thoughtful discussion, and cultural immersion made this experience unforgettable.”
We hope that all of our students enjoyed their time in St Andrews. Applications for St Andrews Summer Study 2026 will open later this year so keep an eye on our webpages and social media platforms for more information!
