Embarking on an exchange program at the prestigious University of St Andrews in the United Kingdom was a transformative experience that allowed me to immerse myself in a rich academic environment while exploring the captivating history and traditions of Scotland. The insights gained and memories made have left an indelible mark on my life.

Immersing myself in Scottish culture was a highlight of my exchange experience. St Andrews, with its picturesque landscapes and historical landmarks, provided a captivating backdrop for exploration. I was also fortunate enough to travel to iconic cities such as Edinburgh, Birmingham, and London, exploring the culture of different cities in the UK and immersing myself in their rich history and architectural beauty.

Participating in fun events at the university was a memorable aspect of my cultural immersion. I attended a lively Jazz night, where I danced and played pool with my new friends. I also attended the Feminist Society’s Dance-A-Thon to celebrate Women’s Day, where I enjoyed great music and danced with everyone. These experiences allowed me to connect with locals and other exchange students.

I also participated in some Chinese cultural activities in the local area. During the Spring Festival, I participated in the paper-cutting activity organized by the Chinese Society of the University, visited the local lion dance performance with my friends, and attended the University’s Spring Festival Gala organized by Chinese students. In addition, I also participated in the Hong Kong film screening event jointly organized by the Film Association and the Chinese Society. It is also very interesting to see the local people’s exploration of Chinese culture from the perspective of an exchange student from China.

My semester at the University of St Andrews was a remarkable journey that combined academic excellence with cultural immersion. The university’s rich history, rigorous academic programs, and vibrant community provided a fertile ground for personal and intellectual growth. The connections made, knowledge gained, and memories created during my time at St Andrews will forever resonate within me. I would encourage future students to seize the opportunity to embark on their own exchange advent.

Thank you to Yuyan for sharing her experience with us. You can read more about our students’ experiences in the Global Education section of the Global Office blog.
