Enhancing internationalisation opportunities for doctoral students – postgraduate research symposium, St Andrews 25 and 26 March 2024.

The Global Office is delighted to be able to invite participation in a symposium aimed at postgraduate research students to promote international collaboration, to create networks, and to develop career-based and soft skills. Supported by the Scottish Education Exchange Programme, the symposium is designed to connect PhD researchers, to share research outputs, and to learn from professional services colleagues working in skills development. Working with several key institutional partners in Europe and around the world, the symposium will also offer a truly international perspective on career opportunities in academia and elsewhere, and in different academic settings around the world.

The symposium will be held in a hybrid format to enable in-person activity, but also to offer students at our partner universities worldwide to participate from a distance. St Andrews students, students on Global PhD or co-tutelle programmes with St Andrews and a partner university, and PhD students at our partner universities are all welcome to attend, whether online or in person.

Over day one, students are invited to give short presentations about their research in three-to-six minute short outlines. Presentations can take either the three-minute thesis format or the Pecha Kucha format, and should provide other attendees with an introduction to a research area, a theme within a PhD, or thesis plans. We particularly encourage material that demonstrates a link to St Andrews’ or a partner university’s strategic research themes, or to the UN SDGs. Following presentations, there will be dedicated time for in-person attendees to meet and network with the aim of creating research connections across synergistic areas.

Day two will focus on skills development and career-oriented discussions to share best practice and understanding of different norms. Colleagues from the Centre for Educational Enhancement and Development (CEED) and from Careers at St Andrews will present alongside academic colleagues from St Andrews and partner universities, as well as Global Office representatives. By the end of the second day, participants will have heard about how to approach career objectives in different international contexts, and in academic and other settings, and will have heard from colleagues directly involved in Higher Education internationalisation and partnership at various levels of interaction across academic and professional areas.
