A delegation from the University of St Andrews recently visited our strategic partners Charles University as part of their ‘University of St Andrews Day’ in Prague. This hybrid event was a chance for colleagues from Charles and St Andrews to celebrate past achievements since signing strategic partnership agreement in 2019 and to present a future of even deeper and broader collaboration between the two institutions.

The delegation included several members of the Principal’s Office including Professor Ineke de Moortel (Master of the United College), Professor Stephen Gethins (Assistant Vice-Principal International) and Ester Ruskuc (Vice-Principal Strategy). Also in attendance was Samantha Lister (Director of the Global Office) along with academics from the School of Psychology and Neuroscience (Dr Paula Miles), School of English (Kamila Oles) and the School of Art History (Shona Kallestrup).

The event included an opening lecture from Professor Ineke de Moortel (Master of the United College) who was invited to speak on ‘Promoting Sustainability in Higher Education: Strategies, Challenges and Impacts’. Professor de Moortel outlined the strategic journey that sustainability has been developed through at St Andrews, considered the challenges involved and the case for the unique impacts that universities can make on sustainability through education and research.

This was followed by short presentations from researchers at both Charles and St Andrews, providing an overview of the varied collaborations that are already in development, and the potential to enhance these further. The Head of Centre for Strategic Partnerships at Charles and the Director of the Global Office at St Andrews each outlined the context and framework of our strategic partnership and opportunities for further co-operation. There was also a chance for an interactive discussion with colleagues in Prague and joining virtually from St Andrews, exploring areas of academic synergy and opportunities to broaden the reach and depth of our partnership activities across the institutions.
