The reason I chose to apply for St Andrews Summer Study is because I am contemplating returning to the UK for graduate school. These three weeks in Scotland were my opportunity to experience the culture, meet with professors, and really think about my academic future. Looking back on it now, my time at St Andrews has solidified my desire to comeback and further my education here. That was the biggest take away from the program. For me it was a trial period to see if I want to commit two, three, even four years of my life in a different place.
“Summer Study has solidified a desire to further my education in St Andrews”
My favorite part of summer study was the cultural immersion. After morning lectures, I would spend the afternoon walking around St. Andrews taking in the sights and sounds that it offered. I loved going down to the golf course, visiting the cathedral or exploring the shops on Market Street. It was also great having an amazing cohort for the program, we really bonded during our short time in Scotland which was one of the pleasant surprises of the whole experience.

The opportunities to travel were amazing and St Andrews Summer Study made every effort to introduce us to the beauty of Scotland. We went to places like Dunnottar Castle and Falkland Palace which really helped me visualize what we were learning during the lectures. Dunnottar Castle was one of the most breathtaking places I’ve been to and definitely the highlight of my trip. We also did day trips to Edinburgh and Glasgow which allowed us the chance to do some personal adventuring and sightseeing. Overall, the summer study was the perfect blend of traditional studying and traveling.
“I would absolutely recommend a summer at St Andrews. It was fun, exciting, informative, and memorable.”
Another reason I loved this opportunity to go to St Andrews was that it connected me with my Scottish roots. On my mother’s side, my family is part of the Morrison clan, which is a Highland clan in Scotland. I got the opportunity to learn a bit more about my family and where we come from. So, in addition to coming away from St Andrews with a clearer sense of what I want to do academically, I also came away with great pride and love for my family heritage.

So, if you are like me and you are thinking about grad school in the UK or maybe you just want to travel, I would absolutely recommend a summer at St Andrews. It was fun, exciting, informative, and memorable. It does force you to break out of your comfort zone a little, which can be intimidating, but the rewards are well worth it.
